PostSubject: Bulgaria Road Tax Vignette   Mon Oct 26, 2009 8:27 pm

First topic message reminder :

Looks like its going to cost even more to Tax your car next year

The price of "
vignettes"
(road tax) in Bulgaria is set to increase next year, announced Rosen Plevneliev, Minister of Regional Development.

The price of vignettes has not changed for the past two years. The most popular are annual vignettes, which cost BGN 67. In 2008, the revenues collected totaled BGN 217 M. In January this year BGN 103 M were collected, according to the Road Agency.

In October 2009, the recently sacked director of the Road Agency, Yanko Yankov, had announced that the price of stickers would not be increased in 2010.

The National Road Infrastructure Agency stated that there is still no decision on how much new stickers will cost, nor whether this hike will apply to all categories of vignette.

Three ministries those of Regional Development, Transport and Finance are meeting Monday night to discuss the matter.

Plevneliev told the Bulgarian National Television there were several variants to be discussed. The final option will be announced Wednesday, when the budget is to be put before the Council of Ministers

The price increase should be applied only to one-year vignettes, in the opinion of the Minister of Regional Development.

The Ministry of Transport prefers not to offer an opinion, because they have not yet received the analysis of the Road Agency, said Minister Alexander Tsvetkov.

The Ministry of Finance commented that they are still analysing whether all types of vignettes are to go up and by how much, or whether the rise should be limited to certain categories only.

Currently, a tender is open for the selection of vignette distributors;
the project is worth BGN 40 M, over a period of 4 years, and the deadline for presentation of offers is November 2.

At the moment, the stickers are being distributed only by DZI Trans and Bulgarian Posts. The intention of the tender is to provide for more distributors of the vignettes, said Minister Plevneliev.

As we're not going to get better for at least three generations, I think I'd rather just pay the lowest amount legally possible s s s s s

It sounds like when you drive from UK to Bulgaria you need to get vignettes for Austria, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. What with those and your normal UK tax disc, is there a bit of windscreen left to look through?

Yes, but it's a very small gap and you might get a crick in your neck from craning to look through it

Luckily Hungary just issues a receipt not an actual sticker so you have a spy hole left in the middle of the windscreen to see out of [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The Austria one is by far the best value.

You have lovely condition motorway to cross the entire country. This can be done in a matter of hours.

The 'fun' really starts when you pay for what is termed 'roads' in Hungary, Romania and then Bulgaria (is it me, or is it some kind of progression ... with the roads becoming more and more pot-holed the further East you get?) [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

To be honest Chris, I only found Romania and Bulgarias roads to be pot holed, The first time I came through Hungary in March last year, I followed the sat nav instructions and the roads were bad in places, however, when I returned to the UK in May I missed my turning and joined a dual carriageway in error, thinking the sat nav would guide me off at the next exit I stayed on the dual carriageway as it was heading in the right direction Lol as it happens that dual carriageway went straight to the Austrian border about 150 kms if I think rightly, and it turned out that it was the dual carriageway that the sat nav had taken me off when coming to Bulgaria in the March.

Obviously it must of been commissioned after the Tom Tom maps had been released, as the Sat Nav didnt know it existed, the dual carriageway also helped by knocking about 100km off the journey

One thing that did surprise me was the amount of tarmac that had been laid over the mountain roads in Romania, when we came the pot holes were ridiculous and traffic was lucky if it got up to 25 mph in places, luckily we had booked into a motel for the night, otherwise I dread to think what damage would have been done to the van driving that road during the night.

At the end of the day though for what you pay in road taxes you cant expect perfect roads in Bulgaria or Romania
