Bulgaria's 2010 road fatalities were the lowest in 44 years

Tue, Jan 04 2011 11:11 Sofia Echo
For the first time in 44 years, the number of Bulgarians killed on the road has dropped below 800. In total, 775 people died in 2010, or 119 fewer than the previous year, mass circulation 24 Chassa daily reported on January 4, citing statistics from the Bulgarian traffic police (KAT).

Police said that speed cameras, fines, display of graphic images of traffic accidents and heightened control have all contributed to the drop in fatalities.

According to official statistics, there were 6583 accidents in 2010, in which 755 were killed and 8043 were injured, down from 7014 accidents in 2009, and 894 and 8599 respectively. In 2006, there were 8167 accidents, in which 1036 people lost their lives and 10 143 were wounded.

"
Each driver should remember that the most important thing is to be safe and stay alive – not to outwit the traffic police, or the rules,"
Alexi Kessyakov of the Interior Ministry Safety Commission told 24 Chassa. He also stressed the importance of educating young children from an early age about road safety.

Accidents involving pedestrians, or vehicles smashing into trees, have also decreased substantially, according to KAT

That has got to be a small step in the right direction
