PostSubject: Cyrillic Emails   Sun Feb 13, 2011 8:30 am

I just used Google Translate to translate an email into Bulgarian but when I sent it the subject became a series of question marks. I knew that email addresses could not be in Cyrillic but does that rule also apply to contents of the subject box?

Hi fido

I've had no problems sending e-mail in cyrillic. So this could be a 'setting' of some kind in your mail program.

What happens if you type in cyrillic here on the forum?

Здравеи Фидо ... как сте?

mmm very strange, works fine.

Must be something to do with the character-set in the mail client.

Can you change typeface? If so, choose an actual cyrillic one (Times CY, Helvetica CY, etc.), which may fix it?

Can't really help as I use Mac's, not Windows!

Perhaps I did not make it clear, the text of the email remained in cyrillic but the subject became a series of question marks when I opened it from my sent items folder but it is still cyrillic in the actual list of sent emails.

Fido, I agree with Chris - you should be able to send subjects in cyrillic without problem.. what happened is most likely a mix up with the encoding. The fact that you received ??? in the subject but still see in cyrillic in your sent items makes me think it could also be a server issue.

What do you use to send / receive email? Did you send the mail from the web or from a desktop application?

Chris - the most common encoding used in web and applications for cyrillic in BG is [url=http:
//en.
wikipedia.
org/wiki/Windows-1251:4ncje6nz]Windows-1251[/url:4ncje6nz].. I also work on Mac and it handles the cyrillic nicely but still occasionally receive a word doc in ??? or bump on a website with ??? :)
