PostSubject: Should Parents be Allowed to Smack Children   Sun Jan 29, 2012 5:41 pm

Ah well another topic in the News.

Again maybe a poll please admin.

I feel that the answer is yes. When I was young I got a few, my Dad even had a 4"
Leather Belt which was used on each of us once and became the deterrent. He only had to touch the buckle if we were playing up and we sat down and behaved. So that meant that he did not in effect smack us.

Did I yes. But again only the once as my kids knew that if I spat in my hands and then together a smack might have come shortly after. But they knew where the line was and obeyed accordingly. This was not rule by violence just knowing where the line was in being good /bad.

We might have covered this before but what the heck.

It's an interesting topic Tony, and like most things, it's not an easy thing.

In principal, I would say 'Yes' for the very reasons you state above.

But then, most people, adults and children, know where the line is drawn. Unfortunately there is always the small minority who either cross the line unwittingly, or, cross the line purposefully and that is where the danger lies.

Sadly, those kind of people are likely to cross the line in the privacy of a home and therefore very little is known or can be done about it.

I voted yes - If a child is brought up properly they should not even need a smack anyway. Just the tone of voice will do.

I am not talking about a whack with no warning or explanation, I do think that if kids know a smack could be on the cards then they will behave better.

I also voted yes. We had four children, the first two were no problem,
the other two were little devils! Both boys.
A small smack was only occasionally needed, but only with a hand and they knew when enough was enough.
They are now all adults and know right from wrong.
I really think that discipline done in a loving manner works wonders!

I was also smacked, but a few times, as a child and I knew fully well when I was pushing to the limit! Like many others , I can see no problem with a gentle smack across the back of the legs or bottom to enforce discipline, especially when the child has not adhered to the rules of danger. This surely shows a caring parent who wishes to raise a child who knows right from wrong, not one who simply does not care as long as their child is not bothering them.

I agree, even the threat of a smack was rarely carried out when I was a child, and only as a last resort after explanations fell on deaf ears....... I tried to use the same threat of a smack on my own children, to show them that they had pushed me to the end of my tether and that one last push would end in a smack and sent to bed, but unfortunately "
child-line"
has now been set up and parents are to afraid to smack them any more.

I would say yes. I smacked all five of my kids when they were very small and have smacked my grandchildren as well. usual for things that will endanger themselves;
like continually trying to put their finger in an electric socket or on an open fire. I dont think very small children can understand reasoning as it means nothing, but it will hurt my hand does. However i never smacked any of my kids once they were able to understand what they were being told. I do not agree that good manners and good behaviour comes from smacking. I've always tried to make my kids understand why their behaviour is wrong and the consequenses of their actions. Their all good people and i'm really proud of them so i guess it worked. s

My answer is YES, A clip around the ear or a slap on the legs never hurt anybody and it is my opinion that it is a warning to behave in the home. When going to school I think the good behavour code should be part of their education, and if National Service had not been done away with, a lot of the youths of today would have been better mannered and there would be less violence on the streets
It is not funny when law abiding parents get from their children

Yes, I firmly believe in smacking. It does not mess with the children's minds at all and despite liberal garbage and liberal lies it does not have long term effects or mess with intelligence. I was smacked as a child when I acted up and I am about the smartest person in my town (not self bragging but the question calls for me to mention that).

You notice when parents stopped smacking children started acting up. Kids today were not properly disciplined and look how they have turned out. Partying all the time, drinking, getting pregnant and doing drugs. And don't tell me its not true because I grew up with this generation and I seen its faults.

When my daugher acts up (or any future children), I have no qualms about smacking her I will not tolerate it and they will be punished. I love my daughter and will make sure she grow up to be a decent human beings. My dad smacked me and his dad did to him and so forth, and we all grew into hardworking, good, moral human beings. So the liberal lies that smacking mentally destroys a child is just that, a lie!

"
Spare the rod, spoil the child"

"
Stop smacking for fear of losing a child's love is a false love. Children will love you more for rearing them up right"

Yes if a child needs it then a gentle slap on the legs won't do any harm, I have done it in the past and my children do it to theirs now.

We have just received the following on an email from a friend in the UK:

RIP UK. You went soft on discipline. You went soft on immigration. You went soft on crime. Parents were told 'No you can't smack the kids'. Teachers were prevented from chastising kids in schools. The police couldn't clip a troublemaker round the ear. Kids had rights blah, blah, blah. Well done Not so Great Britain. You shall reap what you sow, we have lost a whole generation &
turned them into selfish disrespectful little arse****s who have no respect for people and property! Things need to change!

Bulgarian Parents Frown on Indulgent Child-Rearing Practices

If Bulgarian children often strike foreigners as unnaturally well-behaved in public places, that could be due to the liberal use by parents of smacks, albeit light ones, a survey shows.

According to the poll, conducted by the state-run National Centre for Research of Public Opinion, 65% of Bulgarian parents admit to lightly smacking their children, a practice banned in countries from Sweden to Germany.

At the same more than 80% of the respondents condemn all acts of violence against children, saying this would humiliate the child and hurt its dignity.

In Bulgaria there is hardly any taboo against smacking in public: many a harassed parent can be seen apologetically slapping a tot in a park or supermarket.

Parents say they can be trusted to know the difference between the odd slap and repeated physical abuse.

The survey however shows that the more educated the parents are and more developed the environment they are raising their kid in, the more sentimental and indulgent the child-rearing practices get.

Vocal child-protection groups argue that smacking, however occasional, may mask a serious problem, undermines children's confidence, weakens their emotional relationships, and encourages the use of violence to resolve disputes.
