It is at this time of year that we seem to be food fodder for Gnats or as our Bulgarian friends say Kumar. :Please:No matter how hard we try to protect oneself the little bu**ers still bite us, and the results are often itchy scratch-able areas of red flesh. I know we all know that the bites go away quicker if you don't scratch them, but do we well yes we do.

There are many creams and sprays you can use to relieve the itching but I have been recommended to use PSILO-Balsam 1% gel, it is also useful for sun burn.

Believe or not, I find Rakia..applied to the itchy area, not consumed[well maybe a small one]..works just as well as any of the lotions etc.

This is true but the Bulgarians reckon that the Rakia has to be standing for about 5 years for it to become medicinal :Roll laugh:plus to find 5 year old Rakia, well its going to be easier to find Rocking Horse s*** :M: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Good answer Tony..I actually don't like Rakia unless mixed with honey, warmed and drank as a winter toddy, so my stuff is at least five years old. My next door neighbour makes a mean brew every year and he also keeps bees [35 or so hives],, so my cellar is well stocked with honey and liquor. Last year we had a go at making our own wine using his recipe and I must say it turned out very well. About ten minutes ago I sampled a glass of our very own cab sav and altho' only 9 months old it is very 'drinkable'..can't wait to do it all again [with a few variations].

Good for you :Great:My BG mate makes ours even though I cannot stand the stuff but as he says its good to have some in the house to keep the workies happy if and when you have any. Be caeful when brewing the smells attract the wasps and Gnats so you are more likely to get stung. You can also hang bottles of sugar water near your grape vines to keep the wasps etc away. 1 Rakia is OK, 2 is H, 3 is  [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Oh yeah..the wasps..got plenty of those b**ggers! I found a nest in my workshop roof today and I swear it's as big as a dinner plate! Just waiting until it's dark to go and deal with that one [they are totally docile then]..I got well and truly zapped by some last week when I was weeding the window boxes and it's not very pleasant!!

This past week I have walked down to our neighbour about 100 yards away whom we have named "
Bernard,"
he doesn't know this of course, he has told us his name and we have both forgotten it. His name is pronounceable and but not easily remembered as you have probably guessed, I believe he is a past master at making Rakia and he has acquired some flagstones for us at a reasonable price and I pop down to his place at 8 every night with our steel trolley and bring some of the flagstones back.

Trouble is I can't pull the ruddy thing on my own, so me and "
Bernard"
pull the trolley up the slight hill back to our property, whilst he mutters to me in Bulgaski, only trouble is I haven't a clue what he is saying, but we laugh a lot, so really that is all that matters I suppose, he is happy and so am I after he has given me a hand with the trolley. Whilst I am at "
Bernards"
collecting the flagstones he produces a bottle Rakia which he has distilled earlier in the year for our enjoyment, it is therefore necessary for me to partake of this refreshing liquid to keep him happy and of course myself as well!! Haven't thought about spreading it over my body, Annette wouldn't come near me if I did!
