PostSubject: UK disabled dying   Fri Nov 09, 2012 9:57 pm

I've been reading quite a lot about the welfare reforms going in in the uk and how sick people are being sent for a medical to prove that they are not fit for work? but it looks like no matter how ill you are even if your own Gp says you can not work once you have been to a medical with a company called Atos healthcare which is the company the Dwp use almost all are found to be fit for work even those who are obviously not. I have done a bit of reading about this and there has even been deaths shortly after this company Atos have said the person is fit for work. Now although this does not effect me I know that there are people in Bg who are claiming incapacity benefit legally and wondered how they will feel if they have to go for a medical and are found fit for work even though they may not be? below is a story of 1 of the many that have been found fit for work. From what I can gather although these people who are sick go fo a medical with Atos it's actually a computer program that decides if they are fit oir not? I have also read that thios new system has been condemned by 99% of Gp's in the uk and all of the charities like Cancer research have called for it to be stopped immediately. I have also read that this multi billion pound company Atos will be taking over that administration of the Dwp in the future which will put quite a few out of work because they think they can reduce costs by 28%. Just key in Atos in Google and you will be surprised at how many sites there are in opposition.

Atos Disability Benefits Row: Epileptic Colin Traynor's Death Blamed On Stress Of Being Found 'Fit For Work

The parents of a man who suffered from epilepsy and died after being stripped of his benefits have blamed his death on the stress of being found 'fit for work'.

Colin Traynor, 29, was marked as being able to work as part of the government's overhaul of the welfare system.

He appealed against the decision but died before finding out the result which was ultimately successful.

His family learned the appeal verdict five weeks after his death in April.

Mr Traynor's father Ray said: "
I firmly believe - 100% believe - that the system this government introduced has killed my son."

Mr Traynor told Channel Four News the appeal process should have been carried out more quickly, which would have eased his son's stress.

He criticised the bureaucracy which he believed led to delays in hearing the appeal.

"
I don't want some government minister telling me what he can do, some penpusher in London - they don't even know my son, they've no idea whatsoever,"
said Mr Traynor, from Oldham, Greater Manchester.

"
You've got to change the system we've got today. You've got to stop other people going through this.

"
The assessment is wrong. There are other people like my son out there with different illnesses, and they are going through the same (thing).

"
People are dying."

The original work capability assessment was carried out by the French firm Atos, which has sparked anger with some of its controversial decisions to judge people fit for employment.

But ministers believe the new system is fairer in deciding what sort of work claimants can perform.

A Department for Work and Pensions spokeswoman said: "
A decision on whether someone is well enough to work is taken following a thorough face-to-face assessment and after consideration of all the supporting medical evidence from the claimant's GP or medical specialist.

"
We encourage people to provide as much medical evidence as possible when they apply for Employment Support Allowance, and often people who are found fit for work only provide the necessary evidence when they ask for a reconsideration or an appeal.

"
Since 2010 we have considerably improved the work capability assessment process, giving people a more tailored and personal service."

In a statement, Atos said: "
Our trained doctors, nurses and physiotherapists strictly follow the guidelines given to them by the Government when conducting assessments and make no decisions on a person's eligibility for benefits."

The WCA is essentially the same as the one banned in the USA after a class action lawsuit found the company concerned guilty of operating 'disability-denial factories'. I would like to ask the Government/DWP how they can excuse the use of this discredited biopsychosocial assessment against the British People when it is banned elsewhere in the world as mumbo-jumbo? Aren't they ashamed that it is having such an adverse affect on vulnerable people, as noted by the BMA in their call for the WCA to be scrapped and replaced with a fair assessment?

I have just been reading some of the terrible stories about all this and I am ashamed to admit I'm British, I read one article about how the para-Olympics competitors actually covered up the Atos log who were the sponsors. I remember listening sometime ago when David Cameron made a speech and said I understand disability form my own experience with my son, he clearly didn't/doesn't understand anything about the disabled even though his own son passed away. You would think with a personal experience he would have more of a heart but it's obvious that the con-dems do not have any heart at all. I think it's time the British government started looking after it's own! s

Cameron is not a hypocrite. He genuinely believes that all disabled people are capable of running 100 meters, throwing the javelin, putting the shot, and cycling long distances. To this end he appointed ATOS to prove that they could! It doesn't seem to have occurred to him that there were huge swathes of the disabled who were never represented at the paralympics, and lets face it what events would be proposed for them? High diving into an empty pool? Synchronized jumping in front of trains? (sorry for the black humor). Or maybe the agrophobics? goodness knows what they'd do. What about people born with heart defects who cannot walk far let alone run. No the paralympics have been a disaster for many genuinely disabled people with being accosted in the street by idiots calling them scroungers and benefit cheats - because every disabled person is fit for work - they've seen it on the telly! Or the ones with a blue badge - why do they need that when they can run the 100 meters to the shop in under 10 seconds! Paralympians are as far from disabled people as Mo Farrah is from the able bodied unfortunately people don't seem to realise that, and there's no one telling them the story from the other side of the coin and Cameron is a born liar

It's easier to target the genuine than to go after the benefit cheats!

Little men down through the ages have always attacked the weakest members of society, those least able to fight back. The coalition is full of such ' little ' men . Gove, IDS (the quiet man!) Clegg the bendy man and of course Cameron , Osbourne and Alexander the Yes Man. Notice the difference in tone they took when tackling Rupert Murdock. First they lauded him, then at Leveson they tried to protect him and now Boris Johnson tries to rehabilitate both Murdock and the greedy bankers. Of course the nasty apart of this is that these mainly rich and privately educated men know exactly what they are doing. Divert attention from themselves and their own wealth and failings by pouring approbation on a small unprotected group. Germany once had a group of small men who did the same trick. It would be wrong to claim that the former is equal to the latter, but the tactics are similar and many innocent people will suffer. Educated people should be ashamed of themselves for using such tactics, with the help of a right wing media and obviously a number of educated medics. Its a disturbing sight to behold and Liberal Democrats rank and file must be sick to their stomach that their leaders have enabled this attack on the sick to have happened.

What is the difference between Joe blogs getting his Disability money stopped because he was seen running and any of the paraolympians? Wouldn't be surprised if the competitors received letters from the DWP stopping their disability benefits - all on film as well - Cameron is the biggest incompetent clown that GB has ever had in power - so many people dissatisfied with whats going on but not doing anything about it, Don't know if people are aware 'ANYBODY' claiming disability living allowance will be screened from April next year, and targets to reach irrespective of the persons condition - ATOS part2

What a good topic and it's also good to see that there are those of us who do care about the disabled. It's an interesting point made about the DWP being taken over by this French IT company from France? I wonder if the people who work for the DWP right now who are destroying the lives of the disabled realise that the company they use Atos will be making some of them redundant!! This government would not admit to their disgusting policies being wrong, even if you spelt it out to them. They see the world differently, almost a reverse of reality. Some say why do we allow them to go on ruining our lives, got to say we are apathetic, have no real sense of helping each other? except the few, or caring about anyone not in the family circle or friends. We need to pull together, it's should not be every man for themselves. Dave has calculated our weaknesses, and we play right into his hands.

Make no mistake this coalition is garnering every penny it can from the vulnerable in a bid to appease far right back bencher's and in order to continue to prop up the city and banks with money every time they lose theirs playing the markets.

Once total destitution takes hold it is hard to continue, I know this from personal experience. I like millions of others struggle daily, we have next to nothing and once the small amount we survive on has been taken then our choices will be stark.

The liberals in coalition must take one step back and look at the damage they are inflicting on the poorest and most vulnerable members of society. If they continue in their support then it is fair to say that the concept of 'Liberalism' is dead and has been replaced by 'Cronyism'.

its a smoke screen designed to hide the message 'Work or die' sadly there is no work thanks to this coalitions policies, so we either die or address the real problem of greedy heartless government spivs, princes and perks!

Ever watched the film "
Soylant Green"
? Origanally it was based in the future where people were chosen to die from a system which selected those who's turn it was and they entered a death chamber where their remains were turned into a biscuit called "
Soylant Green.When I read about the "
Pathway"
care system and now this computer programme that decides who is fit for work when disabled it is not so far removed from this film. The difference is that no one enters a death chamber and turned into biscuits for people to eat as there was a shotage of food but people are condemed to die because the goverment wants to save money and free up hospital beds in todays hard nosed society. It seems that goverments would rather pick on the sick and vunerable to save money rather than tackle the real issues that would save millions. Why are our troops in Afghanistan? Answer is "
Oil"
of course as you don't see them in Zimbabwie or any other despot run country as they have nothing to offer.Illegal immigrants I belive run in their thousands where the UK Border agency have failed to apprehend these people who are draining the countries resources by way of the NHS and scams.Remember that Eastern European woman who camped out side Westminster and was given a home and money for her and her kids not so long ago this Summer? There is the financial aid that this goverment throws around to countries that do not need it like China and India to the tune of miilions of pounds. If the troops were pulled out of Aghanistan the maybe they could keep their jobs as soldiers and the financial savings would be immense. So if the goverment were to address these problems then the financial difficulties would be resolved and the people who deserve financial assistance would benifit and not tested by some medical programme to save money.

I've been reading more about this and to some degree I can see why its happening but unfortunately the genuine sick are being forced to work which has led some to suicide. I can not believe that a computer program can decide who is fit and who isn't? Is this what the so called civilised world has come to.

It is very sad indeed and I think you can blame the Cameron lot for this although it was a labour idea but not in its present form

Presumably if you are breathing and can move one limb you are fit for work. The whole problem is being looked at the wrong way round. Unemployment benefit is so low that you cannot survive unless you have additional help from family/ friends etc. There is no work available so a claimant is faced with long term deprivation so they are forced to apply for disability benefit. The youth unemployment has doubled to a staggering 40% in a few years Do any of the wealthy middle classes really understand what deprivation means.

Just to add to this topic which seems to be of interest to some, I found this

Atos hounds terminally ill people off benefits, says investigation
“Why aren’t you dead then?” This was the response of an Atos work capability assessor to an interviewee who said they had attempted suicide several times while suffering with depression.

Two undercover investigations by the Panorama and Dispatches programmes brought home the reality of its treatment of disabled people last week. Ladonia Lowe has leukemia. Last year she was told that her condition was terminal. She undergoes intravenous chemotherapy each week. Yet she is being hounded to undergo a face-to-face assessment, despite being bedridden.
Her husband says, “To harass a terminally ill patient when they have been contacted and told several times is completely unjustifiable and a disgrace.
“How can you possibly think that a terminally ill patient could be fit for work? It’s beyond belief.”
But this is exactly what these assessments do. Stephen Hill from Duckmanton in Dernyshire died of a heart attack one month after being told he was “fit to work”—even though he was waiting for major heart surgery.

Benefit

The government has outsourced the benefit assessments to multinational IT firm Atos, which sponsors the Olympics and in particular the Paralympics. Dispatches recorded one Atos trainer telling benefit assessors that losing a hand would not be enough to get benefits.
When asked what jobs someone could do with one hand, they reply that you could do some work “as long as you’ve got one finger and you can press a button”. Atos tell employees during training that if they declare over 12 to 13 percent of interviewees eligible for benefits, their results will be fed to superiors. The Tories say they have not set targets to declare people fit for work. But an Atos doctor said that the figures came from the government. A separate investigation earlier this year found that 32 people were dying each week after failing an Atos assessment.

I think it's terrible what the government is doing to the genuine people who are sick. My sister works for the dwp and she doesn't like what they have to do either. I was talking to her a few days ago and it seems the company that are doing the health assessments Atos are looking to take over the administration of the Dwp in the near future which is going to me huge redundancies in the call centers at the start but this will them happen in all departments, she only knows this because of something that has been leaked internally, so it seems to me that the government have got the Dwp staff to do the dirty work and now the Dwp staff are facing the same axe as the sick.
