The first part of the question should have read..

1. Across (0 letters)

for one of the great ironies of the English language, is that there does not seen to be a synonym for synonym.

I have a pile of dictionaries and thesaurus (thesauri?, thesaurii?) and have never found a synonym for the word that itself describes.
